Do I need to be Latino to Join?
Although Lambda Alpha Upsilon is a Latino-oriented fraternity, membership is not limited to students of Latino descent. In fact, the brotherhood enjoys and welcomes a vast and diverse group of individuals representing many ethnic backgrounds. It uses this diversity to learn from its members and preserve its strong fraternal bond.
How do I become an Hermano of Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity?
There are two ways of becoming an Hermano of Lambda Alpha Upsilon: 1. If there is an active undergraduate chapter present at your academic institute, then you may apply for membership through the local chapter. For information on becoming a member, click here. Feel free to contact your local chapter of Lambda Alpha Upsilon to request additional information regarding its membership procedures and schedule. 2. If there are no active undergraduate chapters of Lambda Alpha Upsilon at or near your academic institute, then you may apply for membership through the expansion division of the National Executive Committee. What are the benefits of membership? Why should I join?
Hermanos of Lambda Alpha Upsilon are trained to become positive and productive leaders of their respective communities. The leadership and organization skills attained through planning, excecuting, and attending fraternal events and programs are a great asset in the corporate world. The New Member education process cultivates Cultural pride and awareness. Our Network of Professionals assists and mentors undergraduates and alumni alike in their personal and professional endeavors. Most importantly, our brotherhood extends beyond the college years; the family bonds created lead to friendships that last a lifetime.
What is involved in the education process? What is Hazing, and will I be hazed?
The education process is comprised of ceremonies, assignments, and instruction that the candidates for membership are required to participate in to become Hermanos of the fraternity. The assignments are designed to educate the candidates on the history and traditions of Lambda Alpha Upsilon, as well as to provide them insight to their own cultural heritage. Hazing is an illegal practice that is not tolerated by the National Executive Committee, nor the membership of Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity, Inc. It involves requiring candidates for membership to participate, forcibly or willingly, in any behavior that is harmful to their physical and/or mental well-being. The National Executive Committee of Lambda Alpha Upsilon Fraternity will expel any members and/or chapters found guilty of this practice and notify the academic institute and the local authorities of their actions.
What are the costs associated with becoming a member, and maintaining membership status?
Each undergraduate chapter is responsible for collecting membership dues, which may differ according to the local cost of supplies, educational materials, and resources. National fraternity membership fees are established and collected by the National Executive Committee on an annual basis and may vary. National membership fees cover the cost of the fraternity insurance policy, website maintenance, national events, and fraternal development/expansion. All active, dues-paying members are entitled to: a Lambdas e-mail account to stay abreast of fraternity news; attendance and participation at national fraternal events; and discounts on upcoming Lambda merchandise.
How much time do I need to dedicate to the fraternity once I become a member?
This depends on the level of involvement that an individual wishes to pursue. Prospective candidates should consider what is in their best interests, personally and professionally, before committing to any additional responsibilities. The same is expected of all current members. Active members are required to participate in all local chapter meetings, events and programs. Active members must also participate in all mandatory national events and programs as per the direction of the National Executive Committee. Members can elect to become inactive should their personal, academic, or professional life call for it. However, it is in the best interest of the brotherhood, as well as the communities supported by the fraternity, that members remain active and involved. Members of a local chapter executive board face a higher demand of their time. They are responsible for fulfilling the requirements of the academic institute, as well as those of the National Executive Committee. Those requirements consist of, but are not limited to: event and program planning, candidate recruitment, and report submission.
